Luis Enrique: "The Parc des Princes will carry us"

Ahead of the game against Newcastle United FC at 21:00 CET tomorrow night at the Parc des Princes on Matchday 5 of the 2023–2024 UEFA Champions League group stage, the Paris Saint-Germain manager today answered questions from the media.

on the game

"We're in a difficult, tight group, and tomorrow's game is key, as the group could be decided after Matchday 5. Things could also be settled in the final round of fixtures, but I know that my team is ready for tomorrow and that we can do great things."

ON THE FANS

"The Parc des Princes will carry us; I'm expecting a great atmosphere. We really need them. We need a crowd that's more up for it and more excited than they normally are, and we'll be treating this game like a final. At this level, home games are key. Our fans are a special asset for us, and we're expecting an incredible amount of support. The stronger the connection between the players and the fans, the easier things will be, especially in the tougher moments."

ON NEWCASTLE

"They're physically very strong, and they're able to press high and hard, with a lot of intensity. We know that that will be the case again tomorrow, so we'll need to be ready. Our aim is always the same regardless of the match: to keep the ball in the opposition's half in order to stop them from creating chances. In the Champions League, your opponents have more quality, but we still want to have the same aim of being at our best in both attack and defence."

ON TACTICAL Setups

"It's difficult to give instant answers about tactical setups. Tactical outlines make sense, but no team in the world plays in a fixed shape. Everything changes depending on the game and on where the ball is; we adapt to our needs at any given moment. It all changes if we press high, if we press low or if we don't get into the final third, and it also all changes depending on our opponents. We have a basis that we'll start tomorrow's game with."

ON HIS SQUAD

"The team isn't yet how I'd like it to be, but we're still learning. We can still get more out of the players and go even further, but I already like what I'm seeing. There are a lot of satisfying things, but we still have a lot of room for improvement. There's a lot to work on, such as the chemistry between the players, so we've still got plenty of work to do."

ON his centre-forwards

"I have a lot of players who can play as centre-forwards, including Bradley Barcola, Marco Asensio, Gonçalo Ramos and Randal Kolo Muani. I can only find positives from having that choice, and some of them can play on the wing, too. It's an exceptional opportunity for a manager to be able to choose from those players. We have a lot of options, and I like all of them."

ON OUSMANE DEMBÉLÉ

"I've known him since my spell in charge of Barcelona; I actually wanted to sign him when he was at Rennes. He's a different, special player who's always asking for the ball, who accepts criticism and who isn't scared. He's different to what he was like at Barcelona because he's now able to play slightly more centrally. He frees up his teammates because he destabilises opponents and opens up so much space."
