Born in Katanning, the young Lydia grew up in the Australian desert, looked after by an Aboriginal father and an American mother. Following her indigenous upbringing, she would head out into the big wide world as a footballer, playing for the first time at the FFA Centre of Excellence before starting out as a professional goalkeeper for Canberra United FC in 2008.
Lydia would then travel from continent to continent, switching between the United States (with spells at Chicago Red Stars, Western New York Flash, Houston Dash and OL Reign), Sweden (PiteƄ IF), her native Australia (twice returning to Canberra United as well as enjoying stints at Melbourne City) and England (Arsenal), covering no fewer than eight clubs and four countries.
With extensive experience of playing for the Australian national team, including at two World Cups and three Asian Cups (winning one of them in 2010), Williams reached the symbolic milestone of 100 international caps in June 2022, building up a fine CV for herself before joining Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2022.
