The Parisians get closer!

The Paris Saint-Germain women's team drew 0-0 with Lyon this Sunday 30 May at the Groupama Stadium in the postponed gameweek 16 match, therefore keeping their spot at the top of the table ahead of the final gameweek! Here's a look back a what could be a decisive evening...

Off the back of 19 straight wins in D1 and with a point lead in the table ahead of the Fenottes, it was with the intent of being crowned champions that the Rouge et Bleu went to Décines-Charpieu to face Lyon in the top of the table clash. After the Parisian victory in the home game at the Parc des Princes (1-0, on 20/11/2020), then Irene Paredes and her teammates' qualification against Lyon in the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter finals thanks to an OL victory in the capital  (1-0, on 24/03/2021) and then a Parisian win away from home (2-1, on 18/04/2021), Olivier Echouafni and his players knew that they would be in for a fight. Still without Luana and Formiga, but also without top scorer Marie-Antoinette Katoto, injured, the club from the capital lined up with a slightly different team.

The Fenottes had the first chance with a header from Kadeisha Buchanan after a corner (9'), but Rouge et Bleu, with their new 2021-2022 home shirt on for the first time, fought back Sandy Baltimore, who saw Sarah Bouhaddi deny her (9'), and then Ramona Bachmann's effort was blocked (23'). Sonia Bompastor's players then proved dangerous again through Amandine Henry's header that was caught by Christiane Endler (36'), and then from a Sakina Karchaoui strike (40'). But the Parisians finished the first half better as Bachmann's volley went over (45').

It was still level after the break and we had to wait for the hour mark to have more chances. The first was from a Baltimore corner that Signe Bruun just put wide (62'). Kadidiatou Diani then made her way into the opposition box and Baltimore, but Bouhaddi got to the ball before she was able to find the best D1 young player (66'). Near the end OL gave it their all but neither Wendie Renard, whose header was saved, nor Janice Cayman, who saw her half volley fly over (87') or Saki Kumagai who was denied by Endler. Melvine Malard thought she had given her side the victory before being called offside (90+3') but they couldn't break the deadlock.

A solid performance from the Rouge et Bleu to keep their lead at the top of the table by getting a point away at the Lyonnaises, moving closer to the title. A title that is now in Paris Saint-Germain's hands and could win in the 22nd and last gameweek of D1. The Rouge et Bleu will face Dijon on Friday 4 June at 20:45 at the Stade Jean Bouin, whereas the Lyonnaises will face Fleury at the same time at the Groupama Training Center. A game you can't miss!
