End of the road for the Netherlands, Tonnesen victorious against Sweden

On Tuesday, Luc Steins' Netherlands saved their honour in the main round of EHF Euro 2024 by holding off Portugal (33-33), while a Sweden team without Andreas Palicka, who was rested, lost to Norway (33-23).

LUC STEINS DECISIVE ONCE AGAIN

Already eliminated before their final match in this main round, the Netherlands ended their tournament on a high note with a draw against Portugal (33-33). This performance was all the more remarkable given that the stakes were so high for the Portuguese. As a result of this slip-up - and Slovenia's 28-25 win over Denmark - Paulo Pereira's men dropped to fourth place in Group 2, and will not play in the match for fifth place.

The Dutch adventure may have come to an end at the end of the main round, but Luc Steins once again lit up the tournament with his talent. With a hand in five goals against Portugal (2 goals, 3 assists), the capital club's centre-half left the tournament as its assists leader (41 assists).

TONNESEN'S NORWAY TOPPLES REIGNING EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS

In a match where nothing was at stake - Sweden had already qualified for the semi-finals while Norway were eliminated - Kent Robin Tonnesen and his team ended the tournament with a prestigious victory (33-23). Andreas Palicka, who was rested ahead of Friday's semi-final against France, watched from the bench as the Swedes conceded their second defeat of the tournament. Ahead at the break (30': 15-12), the Norwegians remained solid in the second half and ended their European adventure on a high.
