Thilo Kehrer: 'I feel more free on the pitch'

The Germany international spoke to us ahead of Monday's Coupe de France game against Nice.

Thilo, things are going well at the start of 2022 for you. How are you feeling?

"I feel very good. I think I've played some good games this year. I feel good, I feel more free on the pitch. I try to play my best role and I above all want to keep going like that. I want to show the best version of myself on the pitch."

When you talk about feeling more free, are you also referring to having more spontaneity in your game?

"It's true that in the past I had periods with injuries, with certain difficulties that perhaps meant that I wasn't 100% free on the pitch. And this season, I can say I feel very good. I feel free on the pitch, I'm not over-thinking, I'm in the present and that's why I try more things."

How do you overcome the criticism that is inherent at the top level?

"I think I'm very critical of myself. I analyse a lot. I watch games several times in every situation, especially as there is always a different way of looking at things, a different feeling between being in the match and watching from outside. And that's why I always try to improve and watch matches and especially the situations I had. Other than that, it's about working every day. I'm always working. I have always worked. I'm convinced that that is what pays. I know I still have a lot of things to learn."

You play Nice in the Coupe de France Round of 16 on Monday. Is it special competition to play in?

"Yes, it's a big objective for us and we know that in a knockout game, anything can happen. That's why we have to prepare even more, and be even more focussed in such a game. Especially when we're playing Nice, who are a good team and are currently second in the league. And that's why we have to be well prepared and know what to expect."
