Stats & Facts: A look back at the Brest-Paris

Match in numbers

The day after the 4-2 Paris Saint-Germain victory against Brest, this Friday 20 August at the Stade Francis Le Blé in matchday 3 of Ligue 1, take a look at the key numbers and highlights from the game.

Impressive start

By winning in Brittany, the club from the capital recorded their third victory in as many games in Ligue 1 this season after the successes at Troyes (2-1) and against Strasbourg (4-2). Paris Saint-Germain have won their first three league games for the fourth time in their last seven seasons in the top flight after 2015-2016, 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. In their history, the Rouge et Bleu have achieved this feat on six other occasions, in 1985-1986, 1988-1989, 1992-1993, 1997-1998, 1999-2000 and 2005-2006. Mauricio Pochettino's men also recorded a fifth consecutive Ligue 1 win, their best run since September-November 2020 (8). Away from home in the league, the Parisians' record since the start of 2021 is very good, as they are still on a 10-game unbeaten run in Ligue 1 (9 wins and 1 draw).

PARIS are brest's thorn in the side

Paris Saint-Germain, who haven't been beaten by Brest since 26 January 1985 (1-3 in Brittany), recorded their 10th consecutive victory over SB29. They are now on a 22-game unbeaten streak against Brest, a run that is only behind their runs against Angers (24 games, ongoing streak), Saint-Etienne (23 games, ongoing streak) and tied with Nantes (streak ended). At the Stade Francis Le Blé, the Parisians are on a 13-game unbeaten streak (8 wins and 5 draws), and six consecutive wins in all competitions. This is one of the best winning streaks in the history of the Rouge et Bleu, behind those achieved against Lorient (8 wins, 2011-2020) and Nantes (7 wins, 2008-2018).

So far yet so near (from the goal!)

Paris Saint-Germain scored three of the four goals they scored against the Bretons on Friday from inside the SB29 penalty area, a first for them in a top flight match since 21 April 2007 (also three against Nantes). By opening the score with a beautiful volley, Ander Herrera, who scored his 3rd goal in the top flight (all away) and who has been involved in 3 goals in his last 3 Ligue 1 matches (1 goal, 2 assists), scored his 1st goal from outside the box since 22 December 2018 (with Manchester United against Cardiff). Idrissa Gueye, who scored the third Rouge et Bleu goal with a rocket from over 30 metres, has scored five of his nine Ligue 1 goals from outside the box, including three of his four with Paris. Angel Di Maria also scored his 17th goal from outside the box since his debut in the top flight in 2015-2016, more than any other player over the period, with a magnificent lob with the outside of his foot to close out the game. Overall, the club from the capital has scored 10 goals from outside the opposition 18-yard box in Ligue 1 in 2021, more than any other team. The only player to have scored from inside the box, Kylian Mbappé scored his fourth headed goal in Ligue 1, his first for Paris and his first since 19 March 2017, with Monaco at Caen. He has been decisive in 8 consecutive matches in the top flight (8 goals, 3 assists), his 2nd best run in the league, behind February-November 2020 (10).
