Kylian Mbappé named Player of the Year at the Trophées UNFP!

At the end of a remarkable season, Kylian Mbappé has been picked out by his peers and voted Ligue 1 Player of the Year for the 2020-2021 season at the Trophées UNFP.

The real spearhead for Paris Saint-Germain this season and at the heart of a statistically incredible season that will see him crowned top scorer with at least 26 goals in the league and 41 across all competitions, the Paris forward also left a real mark on the other players in the league.

And that's why he was rewarded by his peers, who voted him Ligue 1 Player of the Year for the 2020-2021 season at the Trophées UNFP.

"It's a huge source of pride, it's always the same feeling, a reward for all of the work put in throughout the year. I thank my teammates, as they are the ones that help you, give you confidence and I thank the club too. It's another step into history, my history, to leave a mark on this league. I am hungry, but every trophy is different because it represents a different season, different emotions. It always comes with very strong emotions, strong recognition. Coming from all of the other players in the league who say that you are the best, there's nothing better than that..." delighted the World Champion when speaking to Canal+.

The n°7 was in competition with his teammate Neymar Jr, but also impressive opponents like Wissam Ben Yedder (AS Monaco), Burak Yilmaz (Lille) or Memphis Depay (Olympique Lyonnais).

It's therefore the second consecutive season that the Paris Saint-Germain forward has been named Player of the Year, after being voted Young Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons (2017, 2018 and 2019). In picking up this title for the second time, he equals the records of Pedro Miguel Pauleta, Eden Hazard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the only players to have lifted the Trophée UNFP in two consecutive seasons.

As a reminder, Keylor Navas was also voted Best Goalkeeper of the Year. He fought off competition from Paris Saint-Germain Academy graduate Mike Maignan (Lille), Anthony Lopes (Olympique Lyonnais), Steve Mandanda (Olympique de Marseille) and Benjamin Lecomte (AS Monaco). You need to go back to 2014 and Salvatore Sirigu's era to see a Paris goalkeeper take home the trophy.
