The U19s beat Sevilla to make it into the quarter-finals!
The Paris Saint-Germain U19s came out 2-0 winners against Sevilla FC on Tuesday 1 March at the Stade Georges Lefèvre in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Youth League.
From the get go, the young Parisians kept hold of the ball and they created their first real chance half-way through the first half, with Sergio Ramos, Presnel Kimpembe and Nuno Mendes all watching on from the stands. Ismaël Gharbi won the ball in the Sevilla half, drove through the middle and found Xavi Simons in the box, whose strike was turned away by Alberto Flores. Djeidi Gassama picked up the rebound but he too was denied by the Spanish goalkeeper (24'). At the other end of the pitch, Lucas Lavallée dealt with a Diego Fernandez Talaveron's header after Sergio Martinez had crossed into the box (35'). After some smart play from Alexandro Fernandez Gomez, the Sevilla forward called the young Paris Saint-Germain keeper into action once more (43').
Just before both sides returned to the dressing rooms for the break, Diego Jiménez, who had already picked up a yellow card at the start of the match, knocked Vimoj Muntu Wa Mungu off balance in the box (45'). A Penalty and a second yellow card, as the Spanish right-back was sent off (45+1'). Simons stepped up and struck powerfully with his left, sending Alberto Flores the wrong way (1-0, 45+2').
Despite leading, Zoumana Camara's side were almost caught out by a Carlos Alvarez free-kick during the second half, but Martinez's header was just centimetres wide (74'). The club from the capital then came close to getting the killer blow but Simons missed the target (80'), before they finally did put the match to bed thanks to a move that the Dutchman started and played Warren Zaire-Emery in behind the Spanish defence. The latter beat Alberto Flores but Jiménez blocked his effort with his hand and the referee awarded another penalty (84'). This time, it was Sekou Yansané, freshly off of the bench, who beat the goalkeeper with a low effort to the left (2-0, 86').
With the victory, Les Parisiens confirmed their spot in the quarter-finals of the competition, which will take place on Tuesday 15 or Wednesday 16 March in the Yvelines, against the winner of the match between Zilina and Salzburg (to be played on Wednesday at 16:30). Next up for the Paris Saint-Germain youngsters will be a clash against Lille on Sunday 6 March at 14:30 at the Complexe Sportif de Luchin on Matchday 19 of the Championnat National U19.
