50 legendary matches: Mister George downs FC Bayern!

As part of the capital club's 50 year anniversary celebrations, PSG.FR is helping you relive 50 of the biggest matches in the history Paris Saint-Germain. Today we turn back the clock to when Les Rouge et Bleu got the better of Bayern in Munich, thanks to a moment of magic from Mister George Weah.

Just for the fun of it! Paris Saint-Germain, already through to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after a flawless run (four wins; over Bayern Munich 2-0, Spartak Moscow 2-1 and Dynamo Kiev 2-1 and 1-0), travelled to Munich to take on the prestigious Bayern.

The German club, led by French striker Jean-Pierre Papin, were hoping to cement their qualification with a win against Les Rouge et Bleu. For his part, Luis Fernandez has fielded a largely revamped starting line-up featuring the likes of Oumar Dieng, Jean-Philippe Séchet, Francis Llacer and Pascal Nouma. David Ginola, who had been suffering from an adductor problem, was back on the pitch in Bavaria. George Weah was rested at kick-off and started the game on the bench.

Paris Saint-Germain started brilliantly: a Vincent Guerin shot was blocked by German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn (1'), and then the Munich 'keeper saved his team by turning aside a shot from Francis Llacer, one-on-one (4'). Les Parisiens were the more dangerous side, with Pascal Nouma's header skimming the crossbar (34') and David Ginola's free-kick narrowly missing the target (45').

Bayern headed into the dressing room under a shower of whistles from the home crowd, and fought back after the break. Bernard Lama saved at the feet of Mehmet Scholl (47') before palming away a powerful shot from Thomas Helmer (49'). The Germans, pushed on by their fans, looked more and more dangerous and Alain Sutter shot over the bar (54') before they saw penalty claims waved away after contact between Dieng and Papin, followed by an unintentional hand ball from Jose Cobos (69').

Paris Saint-Germain came back into the game and George Weah, who had come on a few minutes earlier, settled the result with a moment of pure magic: the Parisian striker picked up a ball from Paul Le Guen, who had also come on in the second half, exchanged passes with Nouma, before dribbling Helmer, Jorginho and then Scholl before shooting into the top corner of Kahn's net (0-1, 80'). It was an extraordinary goal that knocked the stuffing out of FCB.

Le Guen nearly doubled the lead when Kahn deflected a tipped over a free-kick (89'), and Paris Saint-Germain continued their impressive run of five games and five wins in the competition against a Bayern Munich side that had never been beaten at home by a French club before.

Luis Fernandez proudly proclaimed at the end of the match: "What the players did was great! I take my hat off to George Weah for his goal, but the whole team won tonight."
