The Parisiennes powerless against Bayern Munich

Paris Saint-Germain's women's team lost 1-0 to FC Bayern Munich in their UEFA Women's Champions League on Matchday 2 clash at the Stade Jean Bouin on Thursday 23 November. Here's a look back at this European encounter.

A few days after their steely mentality got them over the line against FC Fleury in the D1 Arkema1 (2-1), Paris Saint-Germain were back on the pitch, but in another competition: the UEFA Women's Champions League. A week after their frustrating 2-0 defeat by Ajax Amsterdam, Les Rouge et Bleu's main objective was to put in a much better performance as they took on Bayern Munich.

And in an attempt to topple the German champions, Jocelyn Prêcheur fielded a central defence consisting of Elisa De Almeida and Clare Hunt to protect the goal, which was occupied by goalkeeper Katarzyna Kiedrzynek. The full-backs were Sakina Karchaoui on the left and Jade Le Guilly on the opposite flank. In midfield, Korbin Albert again took up a position in front of the defence, supported by Jackie Groenen and captain Grace Geyoro just in front of her. On the wings, Tabitha Chawinga and Lieke Martens accompanied Marie-Antoinette Katoto, positioned as a centre-forward.

Right from the start, Les Rouge et Bleu showed their intent by playing high up the pitch at Stade Jean Bouin. Despite facing a team used to holding onto the ball, the Parisians took the game by the scruff of the neck for the first quarter of an hour - although they failed to threaten. Then, the first real chance fell to the visitors, when Klara Bühl burst into the box and unleashed a low cross-cum-shot that Katarzyna Kiedrzynek saved with her leg.

The Parisian keeper was helpless, however, when Magdalena Eriksson headed home from a free-kick (0-1, 21'). Driven by an enterprising Grace Geyoro, the capital club then tried to respond, but the French captain's powerful shot hit the side-netting - but on the wrong side of the post. Despite two efforts from Marie-Antoinette Katoto, Paris were unable to trouble the Bavarians and went into the interval trailing by a goal.

Desire and intensity were the watchwords for the Parisians at the start of the second term. Tabitha Chawinga broke into the German box from the right and saw her cross-cum-shot saved by Maria Luisa Grohs. Jackie Groenen was the next to try her luck, but the Dutch international's shot narrowly missed the target. Just after the hour-mark, her compatriot Lieke Martens also had a shot on target, but it was palmed wide for a corner by the Bavarian goalkeeper.

As the final quarter-hour approached, Kiedrzynek saved from Glodis Viggosdottir, who went close to doubling Munich's lead. In the latter stages of the second half, the capital club made the most of their remaining options, with newcomers Ramona Bachmann and Laurina Fazer both taking their chances on goal, but to no avail. Lacking attacking options, Paris Saint-Germain were unable to find the net and lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich.

The Parisians must now turn their attention back to the league, where they take on Montpellier HSC this Sunday in D1 Arkema Round 9 action. The match kicks off at 14:00 at the Stade Georges Lefèvre in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
