Stakes and info: Everything you need to know before Paris - Real Madrid

On Friday evening, our Parisiennes will host Real Madrid at the Parc des Princes on Matchday 5 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage. Here's everything you need to know about the encounter!

A decisive confrontation

The match will see two heavyweights of women's football battle it out in Paris, with the race for qualification for the knockout stages at stake. If Les Parisiennes are victorious, they will be guaranteed to finish above Real Madrid and therefore will qualify for the next round alongside Chelsea, currently of top the group and Les Rouge et Bleu's next opponent.

If the match ends in a draw, Gérard Prêcheur's side will maintain a two-point lead over their opponents and will be forced to go and pick up a result in London next week in the final match of the group stage against Chelsea, at the risk of seeing the Spanish side take second place with a win at Vllaznia Shkodër.

Finally, if the club from the capital were to lose against Real Madrid, the Spanish side would boast a one-point lead over Les Rouge et Bleu. This would mean Les Parisiennes would be forced to better the result achieved by the Spaniards in their final group stage match in order to overtake them and secure qualification.

A Competitive first Encounter

In the first match between Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, the two sides cancelled each other out in Spain (0-0, Matchday 2). Defensively solid, Les Parisiennes were unable to find a way past their hosts, despite an attacking trio of Ramona Bachmann, Lieke Martens and Kadidiatou Diani.

After a tight encounter where both teams were looking to avoid being exposed by the other, they both had to settled for a point each. The stressful end to the match demonstrated the qualities of this Real Madrid side, and will need to serve as a warning to Les Rouge et Bleu who will come up against a quality opponent that is full of confidence.

jackie groenen's comments

Paris Saint-Germain's Dutch midfielder spoke to PSGTV about this important match for both sides: "The victory at Lyon was very important because it gave us confidence. Real Madrid are a team that has progressed a lot in recent years. They have a very Spanish style of playing, but I think there are things we can exploit."
