Preview: 5 things about Paris - Magdeburg

On Wednesday evening, Paris Saint-Germain Handball play their last EHF Champions League match of the year, hosting Magdeburg at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin for their Matchday 10 clash.

1 - THE TABLE

After nine matches, Les Rouge et Bleu are well placed in the race for the top two spots in Group A (directly qualifying for the quarter-finals). They are currently leading the group, one point ahead of Veszprém and four ahead of third-placed Magdeburg. A win would therefore be a great result for them, with only eight points left to play for after this game.

The Germans are also having an interesting campaign. With 12 points, they seem to be clear of the drop (the first relegation candidates are Plock, on five points) and they have only lost once away from home (at GOG, 33-32), even managing a draw at Veszprém (35-35).

2 - A LOOK BACK AT THE FIRST MATCH

When the capital club went to the Arena Magdeburg at the end of September, they were looking to make up ground on the top spots. And they did just that, taking an early lead. Our last defender, Jannick Green, was one of the driving forces of Paris' 29-22 win - against his former club - with 11 saves!

3 - KEY STATS

Two excellent attacks will face off in this cash! Paris' is the best in the competition, with a total of 324 goals that has come in no small part thanks to the exceptional form of Kamil Syprzak! With 66 goals, he is the Champions League's top scorer (Dainis Kristopans and Elohim Prandi are on 53 and 50 respectively). Our opponents, meanwhile, have struck 295 times, with Omar Magnusson scoring 49.

Defensively, the duel should be just as interesting. Les Rouge et Bleu have conceded only 285 goals since the beginning of the European campaign, but the Germans have been even tighter (278). Jannick sits sixth on the saves chart, with 71. Our offensive line will have to face a keeper they know well in the form of ex-Montpellier and Chambéry custodian Nikola Portner, who sits third on the saves chart with 84.

4 - LAST OF THE YEAR AT COUBERTIN

After a superb year at the Parisian arena - which notably included the lifting of the 2021-22 French Championship title - Paris Saint-Germain Handball conclude 2022 at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin. But before the break, they still have two ultra-important games in the Liqui Moly StarLigue: away to Montpellier and then to Nantes.
