New rules for the EHF Champions League

Given the numerous postponements of EHF Champions League matches (Paris Saint-Germain Handball have played just eight of their twelve scheduled matches), the Federation has made a rule change.

The new rules state that all 16 clubs in the two groups will qualify for the round of 16. However, rankings are still important, since the teams will be pitted against their opponents for the next round based on a mirror ranking. Thus, the top team in Group A will face the eighth-ranked side in Group B and second will face off against seventh, etc.

For example, Les Rouge et Bleu, ranked fourth in Group A, would currently meet the Germans from THW Kiel, who are currently ranked fifth in Group B. While the group phase is scheduled to end in early March, the playoffs are scheduled for the week of 31 March.
