Luka Karabatic: 'Keep a cool head'

As Paris Saint-Germain Handball prepare to return to Liqui Moly StarLigue action in Nîmes on Sunday afternoon, Luka Karabatic sat down or a chat. The captain of Les Rouge et Bleu talked about this very intense start to the season.

After the defeat in the Trophée des Champions, was it important to bounce back quickly in the Coupe de France against Strasbourg (22-36)?

"Yes, we always try to avoid two defeats in a row. We didn't reach our objectives in Poitiers, so we wanted to bounce back in Strasbourg. Beyond the victory, we also wanted to progress in our play. That's what we managed to do. Not everything was perfect, but we have a good base."

Can this win launch you into the league season?

"I think the big highlight of this week is the start of the Liqui Moly StarLigue and the trip to Nîmes. It will be a tricky match. It's always complicated to go and play at the Parnasse. It's dangerous for an opening day. We'll have to win, no matter what. In any case, it will be a big battle."

It will be at the Parnasse in Nîmes. What does this venue mean to you?

"It's one of the most difficult places to play. The fans put a lot of pressure on the players and spur them on. It galvanises the Nîmes players and they are more aggressive. We have to keep a cool head and stay strong from start to finish, because we will be pushed to the limit."

Last season, you won 30 out of 30 (record). In your mind, does that run continue this season?

"No, for me we are starting something new. The squad has changed a lot and the dynamics have changed. We have to build something new. We have to do it little by little and that means matches like the one in Nîmes. It will be difficult, but that's how you create something strong."

As captain, do you have a role to play with the new recruits?

"Yes, of course. It's important to make sure that the squad gets along well. You have to make the newcomers feel good. But there are also other players who have been here for a long time and who can help them integrate. There is a very good atmosphere. It has been easy for them to integrate and bring something to the table."

Are you happy to be back in competition?

"We knew that the schedule would be heavy. We are present on all fronts. I try not to look too far ahead on the calendar. I'm focusing on the next two games at most. You can't look too far ahead. I feel good here, I give my all. I am trusted, and I want to repay that and win titles."
