Group B results - Round 11
Paris Saint-Germain Handball confirmed their leadership of Group B with a 35-31 win in Nantes on Thursday evening. Check out the rest of the results from their Group B right here.
Celje - Szeged: 28-29
The match of most interest to Les Rouge et Bleu saw second-placed Szeged travel to face Celje. The Hungarians had a chance to claw their way back to within three [points of the capital club with a win in Slovenia, but it was no cakewalk, especially with former Parisian William Accambray shooting 8 from 11. Suspense still reigned with minutes to go (57’: 27-27), but with just seven seconds to go, Jorge Maqueda tipped the knife-edge encounter Szeged's way.
Zaporozhye - Flensbourg: 28-26
Zaporozhye just keep on pulling out the surprises. The Ukrainian side are in their very first campaign in the higher groups and nonetheless look set to qualify for the knockout rounds. On Sunday they claimed the prize scalp of Flensburg in a see-sawing encounter. Despite trailing by two at the break (10-12) and then by four a few minutes in to the second half (32’: 11-15), Barys Pukhouski (9 goals) and his teammates turned in an excellent final ten minutes to turn the match on its head (56’: 26-25). In the end, the home side ran out winners by a two-goal margin (28-26) and climbed to sixth place in the group, two points clear of seventh. Flensburg sit tight in third.
Zagreb - Skjern: 32-29
In this final stretch of the group stage, every single point counts. Zagreb, who had seven points heading into the visit of Skjern, knew that they had to win in order to distance themselves from the drop. And the Croatians hardly faltered on their way to a dominant win lit up by 21-year-old right-winger David Mandic's 6 from 7 and Ivan Srsen's nine-goal haul. For the Danes, Bjarne Myrhol shot 8 from 8 but it wasn't enough. While nothing is yet set in stone, Skjern remain on the bottom of the standings, trailing the qualification placed by three points, while Zagreb moved closer to Flensburg.
