Group A results - Matchday 1

While the Paris Saint-Germain Handball's EHF Championms League Round 1 clash in Szeged was postponed, all other matches in Group A took place. Check out the results!

Meshkov Brest - Vardar Skopje: 24-22
To kick off the group stage, Meshkov Brest played host to Vardar Skopje. The task was not easy for reigning champions Vardar, who travelled to take on a very tough side featuring their former playmaker, Stas Skube, who transferred to the Belarusian side over the summer. The Slovenian international didn't spare his former teammates, helping his new outfit to the win after a suspenseful end to the match (58': 22-22). But the real driving force behind this home win was none other than Marko Panic, who bagged six goals (along with Marko Vujin for Vardar) and who clinched the win with the last move of the game.

Flensburg - Kielce: 31-30
The headline clash of the week was certainly Flensburg's match with Kielce. And it lived up to expectations, with the sides duking it out for all 60 minutes. The Poles thought they had done the hard work when Igor Karacic gave his team a three-point lead with he minutes ticking down (48': 23-26), but the Germans, well led by Magnus Röd (6 from 6), made up for their delay and clinched it at the death. This efficiency was combined with style: Norwegian playmaker Goran Sogard hit a superb goal by powering a brutal shot in just under Andreas Wolff's cross-bar. The Flensburgers' next appointment will be against our very own Rouge et Bleu next week.

Porto - Elverum: 28-30
Would the Luc Abalo effect take hold in Elverum? For his first European match with the Norwegian team, our former right-winger found the net three times from as many attempts. The cherry on the cake: victory. Indeed, Lucio and his teammates took two very important points in the race for the Round of 16 in their smash-and-grab mission to Porto. Although things looked tough at the beginning of the second half (31': 17-13), the visitors fought back and, in the end, made the difference. Once again, Luc was instrumental, giving his team a four-goal lead in the final moments (50': 22-26). Ten minutes later, Elverum made their victory official.
