Thomas Tuchel: 'It's not the end of the season'

The Paris Saint-Germain coach and his players were upbeat despite defeat at Lens in their opening league game of the season.

Thomas Tuchel (Paris Saint-Germain coach)

Match strategy

"I saw a good first half with a lot of possession in our opponent's half, a lot of effort to win the ball back. We controlled the game, played with a good rhythm, a good attitude and a good structure. It was a good first half, but it's clear that we also lacked chances. It didn't seem possible for us to create chances and that happened again in the second half. We made a crucial mistake, and it would have taken the same sort of mistake from Lens for us to win. I must admit we lacked rhythm after the goal, and there was a lot of fatigue after 75 minutes. It was difficult to give more. We have to accept this defeat. It's not the end of the season, but only the start. We have four games to play in 10 days."

Players coming back

"I don't know if it'll be possible. Perhaps some players will play, but if they play, they'll have had only one training session before the game. So, what will we be able to expect from those players? Yes, we can give them some time on the pitch, because they need that for match fitness and to recover. But if, for example, Neymar plays, if Angel Di Maria plays, that means them playing the Classique with just one training session. If they're there, OK, but physically, I can't really expect them to be game-changers. We need to talk with the players and the doctors too."

Marco Verratti (Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, speaking to Canal+)

"What I can say is that we gave everything we could. Today, that was our maximum, because we've had just a week of training and it was impossible to ask for more. All the lads came back into the dressing room tired because they gave everything they could. It was difficult to create chances, but we had a good first half. We sometimes lacked the final pass, but we created chances and did what we had prepared in the days before the game...We have three days to train now before a match on Sunday. We have to show something else to win against Marseille, because we know that it's a game the supporters hold dear in their hearts."
