The Voices Behind the Victories - 20th July – 29th July 2018

“The Voices Behind the Victories” is a celebration of a moment of great anticipation for football fans and French supporters in Singapore alike. On the momentous occasion of Paris Saint-Germain’s first visit to Singapore as the sole Asian destination in the 2018 International Champions Cup, and the opening of its first overseas office here, Paris Saint-Germain and Alliance Française have teamed up to revel in this celebration. As the French team takes on Atletico Madrid and Arsenal at the National Stadium, la galerie sees a cultural mélange in the coming together of art and sport. This showcase puts forth one artistic aspect of the worldwide phenomenon that is football, with a focus on the French institution and a salute to the universal values of sport.

The 46 photographs featured in this exhibition present the carte blanche – the complete freedom of expression – of artists who followed the Paris Saint-Germain matches. Three artists, with three different artistic projects, have been curated to create a shared space that exalts all that lies on the periphery of star players and victories – the spaces and the faces that tell the stories that make history and give football its soul.

The intimate black and white shots by Pauline Rousseau, the moments of kenopsia in spaces where football lives and breathes captured by Romain Bergeot, and the magnificent collage of faces of Paris Saint-Germain supporters photographed individually by Aldo Paredes are an exercise in artistically paying homage to the community of supporters around the team and the sport.

The artistic and cultural values inherent in sport are thus displayed in the hope of creating a complete experience and stimulating a timely reflection.

Art – be it that created by players on the field or photographers in a gallery – can only be remembered if there is someone to see it.
