The Parisians roll on!

Match reports

Paris Saint-Germain consolidated their Ligue 1 leadership by beating an excellent Lorient side 2-1 in a hard-fought Round 14 clash at the Stade du Moustoir. Take a look back at an excellent win...

After having qualified for the Champions League knockout rounds for the 11th consecutive season in mid-week, the capital club shifted focus to its last two Ligue 1 matches before the international break. First stop: Lorient!
With Leo Messi out, coach Christophe Galtier took the opportunity to start Hugo Ekitike up front - accompanying Kylian Mbappé and Neymar Jr - while Danilo Pereira made his return to midfield.

There was no sleeping in on Sunday as the clash between the league leaders and the season revelation kicked off at lunch-time. The first quarter of an hour was played at break-neck pace, and Les Rouge et Bleu wasted no time in responding to the Brittany side's enthusiasm with a first flash of danger from Neymar Jr (7'). It proved, however, to be a mere warning shot at as, minutes later, the Brazilian magician latched onto Hugo Ekitike's lay-off and held his nerve before finding the opportunity to sweep home from close range (0-1, 9').

The Parisians then looked to press home their advantage and with Neymar Jr's attacking prowess at the heart of their moves, they came close - especially through Ekitike, who gave the home defence quite a few scares...

But that didn't stop Les Merlus from starting the second half with a knife between their teeth. The Brittany side, led by key figures Enzo Le Fée and Terem Moffi, equalised early in the second when the Nigeria striker ;attached onto the playmaker's return pass and blasted a shot past Donnarumma (1-1, 54'), before the Italian shot-stopper was saved by the bar (58'). Lorient had managed to take the upper hand, forcing our players to work twice as hard to get back into the game.

It took plenty of character to fight back and secure the win, but our Rouge et Bleu had the tenacity and the heart to dig deep and finally broke down the Lorient defence! Régis Le Bris's side had shut down space to a maximum all game long, but Paris could still threaten from set pieces - as Danilo reminded us when he triumphantly nodded home a Neymar Jr corner! (1-2, 81'). With a goal and an assist, our Brazilian superstar showed he is maintaining peak form ahead of the world Cup, and the whole PSG team showed corresponding intensity as they tightened the screw on Lorient right to the end.

When the final whistle confirmed them 2-1 winners, Paris Saint-Germain gladly accepted the three-point haul - their sixth in a row - to continue their fantastic unbeaten run! Christophe Galtier's men are determined and united and have not given up. They will have one last game next Sunday - also at 13:00, against AJ Auxerre - before the World Cup begins on 20 November.
