Stats & Facts: A look at the numbers from the victory over Real Madrid

Match in numbers

Take a look at the stats and key figures from the Parisians' 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday 15 February 2022 at the Parc des Princes.

stoppage time mania

Paris Saint-Germain once again left it to the final seconds to win the game. As against Rennes a few days earlier,  Kylian Mbappé saved his team with a moment of magic at the end of stoppage time, something which the Parisians are becoming more and more accustomed to.

The Parisian striker scored the winner after 93 minutes and 12 seconds, which is the third-latest goal for Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League! He is second only to Antoine Kombouaré (also against Real Madrid, on 18 March 1993) who scored after 95 minutes and 55 seconds, and Blaise Matuidi, against Barcelona on 2 April 2013, who scored after 93 minutes and 44 seconds. It is also in the top 10 of the latest goals in all competitions at the Parc des Princes!

This victory is also the 1300th of the capital club in official matches, the 4th against Real Madrid. Paris is now the French club with the most wins against Madrid in history.

A controlled game

Paris put in a remarkable performance. Mauricio Pochettino's side controlled 57% of possession and took 21 shots on goal, the highest total in any Champions League knockout phase match since Opta began analysis (2003-04).

In contrast, Real Madrid took only three shots against Paris, their lowest total in a Champions League match since Opta began analysis (2003-04).

The capital club also won the first leg of a Champions League double-header in the knockout phase for the ninth time.

All for one, one for all

The collective was the key to this match, with a near perfect contribution from every player. Kylian Mbappé has been involved in at least one goal in each of his last 7 Champions League matches (5 goals, 4 assists), equalling the record, which he set himself in 2017, for a French player in the competition since Opta began analysis (2003-04).

Neymar Jr made his comeback in style! The Brazilian has been absent for almost three months and was back in action against Real Madrid. He came on in the 73rd minute in place of Angel Di Maria, and it only took him 20 minutes to provide an assist, his 50th in a Parisian shirt.

And what about Marquinhos, who was wearing the armband for the 100th time in a Paris shirt on Tuesday evening. The Brazilian defender's record is 71 wins, 16 draws and only 13 defeats.

He is now the seventh Paris captain with at least 100 appearances with the armband, after, in chronological order, Jean-Pierre Dogliani (100 armbands), Dominique Bathenay (227), Paul Le Guen (113), Frederic Déhu (105), Pedro Miguel Pauleta (114), Claude Makelele (115) and the club's all-time record-holder, Thiago Silva, who captained the team on 293 occasions.
