Rico: 'I played my role!'

Spanish goalkeeper Sergio Rico spoke to PSG TV about signing a new four-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain before looking ahead to this week's trip to Lens for the start of the Ligue 1 season.

Sergio, how does it feel to have signed a new contract with Paris Saint-Germain?
"I'm very happy and very proud to be continuing my career with a club such as Paris Saint-Germain and to be playing alongside so many great players. We have just had an incredible season and I'm delighted to be part of this squad with the chance of reaching new objectives for the club."

How did the permanent move come about?
"I never hid how happy I was here and that I wanted to stay. I spoke with the club, with Leonardo. I have a great relationship with everyone here at the club, I get along well with my teammates and the supporters have always been behind me. All of that counts for a player and my family is also very happy here so that was important for me."

How do you judge your first season with Paris?
"It was an incredible season. I played my role, did the job that was asked of me and it was very positive. I played around ten matches in all competitions and I gave my maximum each and every time.I am very proud of everything that we achieved last season."

How was the experience of the Champions League Final 8 in Lisbon?
"It was a very special time. We playe football to be a part of these types of matches. They were a few of the most important matches of my career and also in the history of the club. And we made history by reaching the Champions League for the first time. I will remember it forever."

Like the match against Leipzig...
"We played a great game against Leipzig. We were very strong and we stayed calm throughout the match. We controlled the game from start to finish, in every department."

The Ligue 1 season starts this Thursday away at Lens...
"We want to continue our good form and show the calm confidence that means we can play our best. We want to make a good start to the season and that means winning this first game. We have to keep our feet on the ground, play like a team and focus on the objective which is victory."
