Retrospective: Another record-breaking year

The winter break is a chance to look back at Paris Saint-Germain's record-breaking first half of the 2018-19 season.

Despite the fact that two of their matches were postponed, Paris ended the first half of the season with 47 points from 17 Ligue 1 Conforama matches - the highest points tally for any club at this stage of a season in France's top flight. This mammoth haul came courtesy of a stunning start by Thomas Tuchel's side, who won their first 14 league matches in a row to set a new record among Europe's top five leagues for a winning start to the season.

With 15 wins and two draws, conceded in Strasbourg and Bordeaux, Paris remain undefeated after 17 Ligue 1 Conforama matches - the fourth time the capital club have done so after 1986, 2015 and 2016. Paris went on to win the league title on all three occasions.

This scintillating form has come courtesy of a rock-solid defence and an incendiary attack. Neymar Jr and his teammates have already scored 50 goals and are the only club to have scored in every league outing so far this season (17/17). This cutting edge has also lit up the club's UEFA Champions League jousts, with Paris boasting the best attacking stats for the group phase - 17 goals in six matches and a competition-high 48 shots on target.

The collective success has been immense, as have the individual performances. Naturally Kylian Mbappé - Ligue 1's top scorer and the youngest player to score a quadruple in the top flight's last 45 seasons - against Lyon in October. The World Cup winner has bagged 13 goals in just 12 Ligue 1 appearances - that's as many as he managed in the entirety of last season!

Two strikes behind the French prodigy sits Neymar Jr, who on 2 December became the fastest player to rack up 30 career Ligue 1 goals. The Brazilian needed just 32 matches to do so. In Europe, the superstar playmaker top scored for Paris Saint-Germain with five goals and also racked up the competition's highest tally of on-target shots.

At the other end of the pitch, world football legend Gianluigi Buffon proved that he lost none of his prodigious talent. The Italian glovesman has saved 84% of the shots that have come his way this season in Ligue 1 Conforama - the best save ratio of any 'keeper to have played two or more matches in France's top flight this season. The 40-year-old glovesman has also racked up the most appearances with a 100% winning record of any player run Ligue 1 Conforama this season (8/8). This unbeaten run has spilled over into the UEFA Champions League, where Buffon has a record of two wins and a draw in three appearances this season.

This amazing first half of the season has Paris Saint-Germain on track to repeat or better their performance in 2017-18, a season that saw them clinch the title earlier than any other club ever has - in Week 33. They racked up an impressive 108 goals - the highest tally for any side among Europe's to five leagues - and 93 points, just three points shy of their own record, set back in 2015-16. A stunning achievement but not out of reach for Thomas Tuchel and his men.
