Paris-Girona: An unprecedented clash

On the eve of their match against Girona FC this Wednesday 18 September at the Parc des Princes (21:00) on Matchday 1 of the group stage, we offer you a preview of the encounter. From team dynamics to the key players to watch, here's a look at what awaits our Rouge et Bleu as they take on the Blanquivermells.

RECENT RESULTS

The Gironistes have had a mixed start to the 2024-2025 season, beginning with a promising 1-1 draw away against Real Betis. After suffering a loss at the Metropolitano against Atlético Madrid, the Spanish side bounced back with two convincing wins, defeating Osasuna (4-0) and Sevilla FC (0-2). However, last weekend, Girona struggled against FC Barcelona, losing 1-4, marking their second defeat of the season just before traveling to the French capital.

On the other hand, Paris Saint-Germain continues to build on an excellent start to their campaign: after a 4-1 win at Le Havre, the Rouge et Bleu put on a show in their return to the Parc des Princes with a 6-0 victory over Montpellier, followed by a third consecutive win against LOSC (3-1). After the international break, Les Parisiens  maintained their strong form with a 3-1 win at home against Brest. With four wins in as many league matches, Luis Enrique’s men are ready to start their European campaign.

The form in numbers

the opposition

Michel Sanchez Muñoz and his team can deploy various formations: from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 and a 4-2-3-1, the Spanish coach has yet to settle on a preferred system. In goal, the Argentine international Paulo Gazzaniga has so far been favoured over former Marseille stopper Pau López. In front of him, the experienced David López and Daley Blind are expected to form the central defensive partnership.

On the right side of defence, Alejandro Francés might be chosen over the Spanish U21 international Arnau Martínez, while the rising star Miguel Gutiérrez is likely to be positioned on the left. In midfield, former Villarreal player Iván Martín stands out as a key component of the Blanquivermells’ setup. The Spanish captain could be supported by Oriol Romeu, who has a more defensive profile, or the young Jhon Solís. The Venezuelan international Yangel Herrera, who was excellent last season, may not be available for the match against Les Parisiens.

However, former Ajax player Donny van de Beek is expected feature at the Parc des Princes. On the right flank of the Spanish attack, Ukrainian international Viktor Tsygankov will be one of Girona's main threats. As the playmaker for the Blanquivermells, he is likely to support the center-forward Abel Ruiz, who joined from Braga this summer. On the left wing, there is fierce competition between Spanish international Bryan Gil and Colombian international Yaser Asprilla.

Additionally, Arnaut Danjuma, who has previously played for Tottenham and Everton, could feature on the left wing or in the role of a second striker. At 37, Uruguayan international Cristhian Stuani might come on during the match, bringing his vast experience to Girona's attack. Despite being newcomers to the competition, the Spanish side will have valuable assets to call upon at the Parc des Princes.
