Liverpool-Paris: A story to be written

Ahead of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second leg against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday 11th March (9pm), we take a deep dive into the trip that awaits our Parisians on the other side of the Channel. We focus on results, the first leg and the dynamics of the game, and take a closer look at the huge challenge awaiting our Rouge et Bleu against the Reds.

The weekend's results

After a 0-1 first-leg win for the English club at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, the Parisians and Scousers were back on the pitch at the weekend, each with a league match to play. At home, Liverpool recorded a deserved 3-1 victory over Southampton. It was the visitors who opened the scoring, only for the Reds to mount a second-half revolt. Darwin Núñez, who should be preferred to Diogo Jota on Tuesday, led the way for his side, while Mohamed Salah grabbed a brace. Arne Slot had initially rested Alexis Mac Allister and Andrew Robertson for this match, before bringing them on in the second half.

For their part, Paris Saint-Germain were in Brittany to take on Stade Rennais FC, an opponent that has often posed problems for the capital club in recent seasons. This time, Luis Enrique's men managed to avoid the trap set by the Rouge et Noir. After goals from Bradley Barcola and Gonçalo Ramos, Rennes rallied to reduce the deficit, but substitute Ousmane Dembélé sealed victory for Paris in the dying minutes with a brace (1-4). Like Liverpool, Paris have once again demonstrated their domestic superiority, and are moving further clear at the top of the league.
