Portugal through after beating Uruguay

Danilo Pereira’s, Vitinha’s and Nuno Mendes’s Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 in their second group game at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar last night.

Four days after getting their tournament off to a winning start by beating Ghana 3-2, Fernando Santos's Portugal faced Uruguay last night with one aim: extending their lead at the top of Group H, which would put them through to the knockout stage. It was mission accomplished for A Seleção, who overcame the Uruguayans in a tight game thanks to a brace from Bruno Fernandes.

The only negative from the evening was just before half time, when Nuno Mendes, who had started the game, had to make an injury-enforced exit, with the Paris left-back appearing to suffer from a muscle injury. As a reminder, Danilo Pereira also got injured in training on Saturday, with the Portuguese federation stating shortly afterwards that he would be unavailable for the rest of the group stage due to "three fractured ribs". Further tests will be carried out after those two games.
