Paris in exceptional form ahead of Nantes clash

After beating Real Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League last 16 on Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain return to the league on Saturday evening in Nantes. Paris Saint-Germain lead the Ligue 1 standings with 59 points after 24 matches and boast a 13-point lead over second-placed Marseille.

59 POINTS

The Rouge et Bleu count 59 points from 18 wins, five draws and only one defeat; it's an exceptional record, especially when one delves into the history of the French top flight.

No other club has ever done better since the first year of the Ligue 1 championship... in 1932! Only Paris Saint-Germain has bettered 59 points after 24 matches, a feat they have achieved four times: 2015-2016 (66 points), 2017-2018 (62 points), 2018-2019 (65 points) and 2019-2020 (61 points) seasons.

Before the win against Rennes (1-0), only one other club had kept pace with the Red and Blue: Nîmes Olympique, back in the 1959-1960 season. But Les Gardois were held to a 0-0 draw by Lens on 10 January 1960, in their 24th league match and were thus overtaken by the Paris Saint-Germain of 2021-2022.

18 WINS ALREADY

Paris' 18 wins in 24 matches is also an exceptional achievement by Mauricio Pochettino's players. No other French team has ever done better. The Parisians have equalled Sochaux (1934-1935), Strasbourg (1934-1935), Reims (1952-1953), Nîmes (1959-1960) and Saint-Étienne (1968-1969).

Paris Saint-Germain are the only team to have recorded more wins at this stage of a Ligue 1 season, with 21 wins after 24 matches in 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 and 20 wins in 2017-2018.

only one defeat

One lone defeat after 24 games (0-2 vs Rennes on 3 October 2021), is also very rare in the history of the French first division. In past years, two clubs remained unbeaten after 24 games, including the club from the capital: Paris Saint-Germain in 1985-1986 and 2015-2016, and Nantes in 1994-1995 were all undefeated.

With this single defeat against Stade Rennais this season, Paris equals Marseille in 1991-1992 and Lyon in 2004-2005. The Rouge et Bleu have matched their performances of 2013-2014 and 2018-2019.

Paris will have the chance to further extend their incredible record this Saturday away to Nantes and maybe even break another record or two.
