Paris hits the 500-goal mark in Europe

On Wednesday 22 January 2025, against Manchester City at the Parc des Princes (4-2), Paris Saint-Germain reached and then surpassed the symbolic milestone of 500 goals scored in European cups*.

42 years on from the capital club's European debut in the 1982-1983 season, we take a look back at the milestones leading up to the 500th goal scored against Manchester City.

the first

Toko against Lokomotiv Sofia (5-1), 28 September 1982

After not scoring in their first European match in Sofia (0-1) in the first leg of the European Cup Winners' Cup Round of 32, the Parc des Princes got its first taste of Europe against the Bulgarians. Toko quickly opened the scoring with a cross from Bathenay (20'), the first European goal in the club's history. The Chadian striker was the hero of the match, scoring a second with a superb half-volley to seal a 5-1 win and a place in the next round.

the 100th

Julio César Dely Valdés against Galatasaray (2-4), 17 October 1996

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain face Galatasaray in the first leg of their UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Round of 16 tie, and they face a tricky evening in Turkey as Nicolas Anelka makes his European debut. After quickly conceding two goals and reducing the deficit through Paul Le Guen, Paris Saint-Germain thought they had done the hard part with an equaliser when Julio César Dely Valdés headed in Raí's cross, helped by a mistake from the Galatasaray goalkeeper (20'). Paris went on to concede two more goals but did what was needed to reverse the tie a fortnight later, winning the return leg 4-0 and securing qualification in the process at the Parc des Princes.

the 200th

Bonaventure Kalou against Panathinaikos (4-0), 13 December 2006

It was a Paris Saint-Germain side devastated by the death of a fan outside the stadium three weeks earlier and in need of a win to qualify for the last 32 of the UEFA Cup. Paris got themselves a 4-0 win at the Parc, with a brace from Ivorian striker Bonaventure Kalou. His second, the fourth goal for Paris in the second half, was a left-footed finish from a Cristian Rodriguez pass (55') and ensured that Paris went through.

the 300th

Edinson Cavani against Ajax Amsterdam (1-1), 17 September 2014

Paris kick off their UEFA Champions League campaign with a tough trip to Ajax in Amsterdam. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was returning to his former club, but it was Edinson Cavani who opened the scoring and took Paris Saint-Germain's European goal tally to 300 when he latched on to an Ibra shot that was cleared off the line by an Ajax defender. Paris Saint-Germain held off the Dutch attacks for a long time before conceding a goal to draw 1-1. In the end, a draw was enough to send the Rouge et Bleu through to the last 16 of the competition in a group with APOEL Nicosia and Barcelona.

the 400th

Mauro Icardi against Galatasaray (1-0), 1 October 2019

Without their attacking trio of Neymar Jr, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappé, Paris consolidated their first UEFA Champions League group win over Real Madrid (3-0) with victory over Galatasaray. Mauro Icardi took advantage of the trip to Turkey to score his first goal for Paris, after a Marco Verratti pass and Pablo Sarabia's perfect cross (52'). It was a decisive goal for the Argentinian striker, who now wears the colours of the Istanbul club.

the 500th

Ousmane Dembélé against Manchester City (4-2), 22 January 2025

Paris Saint-Germain took on Manchester City in the pouring rain at a red-hot Parc des Princes. After a first half dominated by the Parisians, although they failed to capitalise on their chances, the second half got off to a difficult start for Paris, with two early goals from the Citizens (0-2). But the introduction of Ousmane Dembélé changed all that. Taking advantage of Bradley Barcola's work on the left wing, the Paris No10 reduced the deficit with a side-footed finish in the 56th minute, reviving the hopes of the Parisian fans. It was a moment that marked a turning point in the match, starting a memorable comeback for the team.
