Paris beaten by Lyon

Paris Saint-Germain slipped to a 1-0 defeat at home to Lyon in Sunday's Ligue 1 encounter.

After a busy international break, Paris Saint-Germain welcomed Lyon without Neymar Jr, Presnel Kimpembe, Sergio Ramos, Nordi Mukiele and Carlos Soler. It meant Christophe Galtier started with Kylian Mbappé and Leo Messi up front, and Renato Sanches in midfield along with Marco Verratti and Vitinha.

On a chilly evening, Paris pressed Lyon early on and created an opportunity for Vitinha, who sent a shot over the bar after being teed up by Kylian Mbappé (3'). The newly appointed France captain then had a shot partially blocked, and watched as the deflected ball narrowly cleared the crossbar (8').

In a frantic opening to the game, the pace never dropped, and Lyon had promising situations too, though most were dealt with by a superb Marquinhos, notably in keeping Alexandre Lacazette in check (18').

Half-an-hour in, the pace dropped a little, but the goal threats remained on either side. Lacazette sent a penalty spinning off a post (36'), while Renato Sanches fired in a shot that might have brought more (44'). After the break, Lyon made the breakthrough thanks to Bradley Barcola (0-1, 56').

That was the cue for the Rouge-et-Bleu to push still more, and in the closing stages, Achraf Hakimi shot wide (80') and Ismaël Gharbi (85') also had an opportunity, but could not find the net.

But despite a frustrating defeat, the Parisians took the three points, remain top of the table, and now must look forward to the upcoming games, starting with next Saturday's trip to Nice.
