Paris beat Monaco to lift Trophée des Champions
Paris Saint-Germain beat AS Monaco 1-0 on Sunday 5 January 2025 in the Trophée des Champions at Stadium 974 in Doha. PSG have now won the Trophée des Champions for the 13th time in their history.
After a successful Qatar Tour that lived up to all its promises, the Parisians wanted to round off the year in style with their first trophy in 2025. With a genuine classic on the bill at the Stadium 974 and the Doha skyline as the backdrop, the stage was set.
Luis Enrique picked a standard line-up, with Désiré Doué up front alongside Lee and Dembélé for his first outing of the calendar year and Donnarumma back in goal behind his typical defence. In midfield, Neves joined Vitinha and Warren Zaire-Emery.
The Parisians got off to a flying start when Lee's free-kick caused trouble in the area, before Salisu's scrambled clearance gave Köhn his first piece of work (3'). The Monegasque keeper was then saved by his bar after a shot from Doué, who has been in the ascendancy in recent weeks. His powerful shot from the edge of the box hit the crossbar, leaving Köhn helpless (9').
The Swiss goalkeeper was being kept busy and Ousmane Dembélé had two good efforts in quick succession (20', 22').
Neves then tried his luck with a header from a free-kick that Lee curled in with his left foot, but the Portuguese was unable to get enough on it and the Rocher players held on for the time being. However, the Parisians had to remain vigilant, as Donnarumma did well to keep out Akliouche's shot (40').
The start of the second period saw Adi Hütter's men grow into the game. But neither Minamino (47') nor Akliouche (50') were able to beat Donnarumma. The latter was decisive in front of Ben Seghir, who struck the Italian keeper with a powerful shot (53'). Gigio was then saved by his post (54') from Vanderson's shot, marking an important moment for Monaco, who then eased off to leave the Parisians in control of possession once again.
And in control of the match. Barcola came on to inject some dynamism down the left flank and put the opposition defence on the back foot. Hakimi had the best chance up to that point, with a pull-back from Doué that found the Moroccan full-back in the heart of the opposition box. His shot was miraculously saved by Köhn (74').
Even Ramos, who came on as a late substitute, came up against his firm hand from point-blank range when he met in an inch-perfect cross from six yards (90'+1). The goalkeeper was finally beaten though, with little help from his defence, who completely missed Ousmane Dembélé at the back post from a cross that flew past everyone. Dembouz scored his 9th goal of the season to break the deadlock in the dying moments (1-0, 90'+2).
Paris Saint-Germain claimed their 13th Trophée des Champions and their first trophy of the season. Monaco will regret not having scored during their only bright period of the match, but the Parisians were solid and kick off the new year in the best possible way.
