Mauricio Pochettino: ‘Win and hope’

On the eve of Matchday 38 and the final encounter of Ligue 1 at Brest on Sunday 23 May at 21:00 at the Stade Francis Le Blé, the Paris Saint-Germain coach answered questions from PSG TV and the press. Extracts.

Morale

“I think that we are looking forward to and are motivated for this final match. We don’t have our destiny between our own hands, but taking home all three points is down to us. Maybe that won’t be enough, we will wait to see what happens at Angers. But we need to believe, to be ready and competitive. In football, you always have to believe. Whatever happens, we need to win and hope. We know that everyone will give their best. We hope to win on Sunday and take home the title.”

PREPARATION

“We didn’t have a lot of time after the final of the Coupe de France. We did a bit of video work and training, but not too much. The motivation is there, we know what we need to do to dominate the match. The most important thing is the spirit that we will have on Sunday to do the job, give our best,  and put in the performance that we want to. The players will need to be focused on what they need to do to win this match. Then we will see what happens at Angers.”

Appraisal

“We have been together for five months now. It has been difficult with the pandemic and with matches every three days and injuries, but we have learned a lot in these special circumstances. It's an incredible experience. We want to help the club to become better. We hope to win the title on Sunday and make it a treble. Not qualifying for the final of the Champions League was a disappointment, but we are happy with the players, the staff and the people around us who have worked hard.

Titles

"Titles are very important for the club, the players, the staff and the supporters. When you play for Paris Saint-Germain, you always need to win. We will try to win on Sunday and hope that something happens at Angers. I think that a team like Paris Saint-Germain goes into every competition to win it. When that isn’t the case, the disappointment and frustration are always huge.  But we are thinking positively about Sunday.”
