Marquinhos passes the 200-match mark as captain!

Having arrived in Paris in 2013 and worn the captain's armband for the first time with the capital club in 2017, Marquinhos continues to climb the ranks with Paris Saint-Germain. In games against Atlético Madrid and Angers SCO just before the international break, the Brazilian international first reached and then surpassed the milestone of 200 matches as Paris Saint-Germain's captain. We take a look back at the career of a captain who has left his mark on Les Rouge et Bleu.

A captain everyone agrees with. On and off the pitch, Marqui has won the hearts of everyone around him for almost 12 years now, from supporters to managers, not forgetting his coaches and, of course, his team-mates. A true emblem of Paris Saint-Germain, the Brazilian defender first wore the captain's armband at kick-off on 30 September 2017, in his backyard at the Parc des Princes, on the occasion of a sparkling victory over Girondins de Bordeaux (6-2). At the age of 23 years and 139 days, he became the fourth-youngest captain in the capital club's history behind Mamadou Sakho, Nicolas Anelka and Ronaldinho.

A few months later, on 14 February 2018, Marquinhos donned the captain's armband again, but this time for a prestigious European match and a Champions League quarter-final loss to eventual winners Real Madrid (3-1). The young Brazilian, who had arrived in the capital at the age of 19, was battle tested and ready to take over from his idol and team-mate Thiago Silva, for whom hehad been vice-captain for three seasons. On 3 August 2019, the São Paulo native won his first Parisian title as captain, in a stunning 2-1 victory over Stade Rennais FC in the Trophée des Champions.

It was the first of many titles for the man who went on to take over definitively from compatriot Thiago Silva at the start of the 2020-2021 season, following on from an exceptional Final 8 in Lisbon, where he scored in the Champions League quarter-final against Atalanta Bergamo (2-1) and the semi-final against RB Leipzig (3-0). It was the culmination of an impeccable sporting and personal journey for the man who epitomises Paris Saint-Germain's values of solidarity, ambition and excellence.

Since then, Marquinhos has shone in the armband and guided his team to the top, winning three French league titles (2022, 2023, 2024), two Coupes de France (2021, 2024), two Trophées des Champions (2022, 2023) and two appearances in the Champions League semi-finals, in 2021 and 2024.

With 137 victories to his name in 201 matches as captain, Marqui has reached a new milestone in his history with Paris Saint-Germain. Does he have his sights set on mentor Thiago Silva's record of 293 captaincies for Les Rouge et Bleu? It looks like another challenge for the man who is already the most capped player in the history of the Parisian club...
