Luis Enrique: "We want to make the fans happy"

On the eve of his side’s game against Borussia Dortmund at 21:00 CET tomorrow at the Parc des Princes on Matchday 1 of the UEFA Champions League group stage, the Paris Saint-Germain manager answered questions from the media. Below are some extracts.

ON THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

"It's never a good sign to be obsessed with something, be that in football or in life. You need to have hope and ambition, but being obsessed never works. We have a lot of hope, we're really looking forward to playing, and we want to make the fans happy."

ON THE TEAM'S AIMS

"We need to wait and see how the competition starts. Football is a wonderful sport because every result is possible. As a club, we're convinced [of our own ability] and highly motivated. We go into every competition looking to go as far as possible. We're ambitious, and the only aim that we need to have is to play to win."

ON THE TEAM'S START TO THE SEASON

"In terms of results, we haven't necessarily started well, but everywhere I've managed, this was the same. There's a lot of information for my players to take on board, and right now, they're very receptive. They're eager to do well, and I'm delighted with my players. The fans are incredible, too. Their support is unwavering, and that's what we need. The process takes time, but I'm only focused on my own work. I want my players to understand how I want them to play. I also want to get results as soon as possible, but that takes time."

ON NICE

"There are always a lot of details to correct in football. The Nice game has nothing to do with the Dortmund game; they're two separate competitions. We have a lot of room for improvement, but there are things that we're already doing well. What matters is what the fans see. We're playing well, we're running with intensity, we're doing a lot of running with and without the ball, and for the moment, the players' behaviour has been irreproachable."

ON OUSMANE DEMBÉLÉ

"Great players can play in any position. We're working in a system without a number ten, but he's a player who can play on the wings or in the middle depending on the in-game situation."

ON MANUEL UGARTE

"There are a lot of things that he can improve upon, as there are with every player. Ugarte is a major revelation for a lot of people, but at Sporting Lisbon, he was already a good player. He's young, has a strong character and is an important player because he gives the team balance. He's one of the nicest surprises of the season so far."

ON THE TEAM'S MINDSET

"To win the Champions League, you need a great team. Every player needs to be ready to play and to step onto the pitch. You need to be together as a team and humble. You need to want to win and to help the team."
