Luis Enrique: "I'm an attacking coach"

Paris Saint-Germain's new Spanish coach gave his first interview to the club's media. He talks about his motivation at the start of his adventure in Paris and the kind of football he preaches.

WELCOME TO YOUR NEW FAMILY LUIS. IT'S A NEW CHAPTER IN YOUR CAREER, HOW DO YOU FEEL?

"I'm very happy, very proud and can't wait to get started. Everything is new and when it's new, it's like stepping out of your comfort zone. But I'm motivated because it's a new country, a new city, new players, new people to get along with, a new team. A lot of new things, but it's all very positive and as I said, I'm really looking forward to getting started."

what attracted you to the paris saint-germain project?

"The main reason is that the directors have a very clear idea of the team they want to build, the project they want to implement based on the resources available to Paris Saint-Germain. And I'm not just talking about economic resources, I'm also thinking about resources in terms of infrastructure. On that basis, I think that this project has everything that a coach of my level needs."

SO WHAT KIND OF COACH ARE YOU? what do you want to bring to the team?

"I think that anyone who has seen my teams play knows a bit about my ideas. I'm clearly an attacking coach. My staff and I want a team that plays from the first minute, a team that doesn't hold back and that attacks. We want our fans to enjoy themselves and the players to enjoy representing Paris Saint-Germain."

WAS THE fact that there are great players in the PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN squad a source of motivation for you?

"All the players at Paris Saint-Germain are great players: the youngsters who come from the youth academy, if they aren't yet, they will become great players, those who are already there, those who have been signed by the club, the stars that we already have in the team. But to build a team, you need a mixture of all these things and a coach who believes in them. And in this case, I'm entirely convinced that we're going to succeed."

YOU ARE THE COACH WHO INAUGURATED THE PSG CAMPUS, IS IT AN IDEAL TOOL TO WORK WITH?

"What a blessing this is! I come here without having done anything and I'm the first person to benefit from this Campus, I'm even the first person to have slept here. I'm repeating myself, but I'm really lucky, it's something I really appreciate. Coaches who like to play attacking football need top-class pitches and facilities, and here it's simply wonderful from that point of view. Few clubs in the world have facilities like this and I think they are on a par with what Paris Saint-Germain is. In any case, as I said, I'm really pleased to be the first to be able to use them."

THERE ARE PLENTY OF DIFFERENT NATIONALITIES IN THE PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN CHANGING ROOM. how do you feel about this?

"Today, in all the biggest clubs in the world, clubs with this much potential, there are at least five or six different nationalities in the dressing room. You often have to be able to speak three or four languages. Communicating in different languages is part of modern football, it's normal. I see it as an opportunity. Learning French is one of the things I want to do quickly, but I can also speak Italian with certain players, English with others, Spanish... I think it's very important for everyone to be able to communicate in the language that suits them best, but it's also very important for all the foreign people who come to France and Paris to learn the French language."

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN, WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS as you arrive here?

"My aim is for Paris Saint-Germain fans to be proud of their team, to be proud of what they see on the pitch, and to enjoy the spectacle. And they will appreciate it if they see effort, hard work, a team that attacks well and defends well, a team that plays together, a united group. If they like that, and I'm sure they do, then they'll be proud of their team."

YOU KNOW THE PARC DES PRINCES A LITTLE, BUT YOU ARE ABOUT TO DISCOVER IT AS THE COACH OF PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT WORKING IN THIS STADIUM?

"It's a stadium that I know very well, having struggled there as a player and then as a coach. It's a very tough stadium for opposing teams and I hope it will be even tougher. The more unity there is between the members of the team, the more unity there is with our supporters, with our fans, the better it will be for us. Last season, the team lost quite a few points at home. We need to be virtually invincible at home and to do that we need our fans. But before you can ask for anything, you have to know how to give it. We have to make our fans want to support us and enjoy our football."

YOU MENTION THE FANS, DO YOU HAVE A MESSAGE FOR THEM?

"I want you to know that I want to make you proud, I want to give you the feeling that your team works, fights, plays good football and above all that it plays every match to get points without ever backing down. That's what I can guarantee you as a coach. I don't know if it will work, but I'm convinced we can do it, even if I can't predict the results. I hope you enjoy yourselves."
