Liverpool have the last word

The context
With confidence sky-high on the both sides after faultless starts to their respective league campaigns (5 wins), Liverpool and Paris dived head first into European competition with a Group C opener at Anfield, the stage of the opening night of Paris' seventh successive Champions League season.

Key moments
As usual at Anfield, a red wave swept forward towards Alphonse Areola's goal. The Paris goalkeeper touched Virgil van Dijk's shot over the crossbar (6') and then pushed away a James Milner shot (7'). It was then time for Neymar Jr and Edinson Cavani to show Paris' colours for the first time, bringing Alisson Becker into action twice in quick succession (17'). The Rouge-et-Bleu looked to be gaining the upper hand - enjoying 56 percent possession - when Liverpool seized the initiative through Daniel Sturridge's header (1-0, 30'). From a corner, Kylian Mbappé responded, but saw his shot graze the crossbar (34'). Soon after, Liverpool were awarded a penalty, and James Milner gave Areola little chance from the spot (2-0, 36'). Hope was reborn though before the break as Thomas Meunier smartly volleyed home (2-1, 40').

After the break, the Reds did not flinch, and Mohamed Salah thought he had scored the hosts' third only for the referee to rule it out for a foul on Areola (58'). Paris were holding on, and with time running out, they drew level: Neymar Jr accelerated towards the penalty area before feeding Mbappé, who stunned Anfield (2-2, 83'). But in a breathless finish, Roberto Firmino's cross-shot found the far corner of the net (3-2, 90+2') as Paris fell just a few seconds short of a happy ending to the evening.

A Parisian in the game: Thomas Meunier
He revived his side just before the break with a high-quality instinctive strike (40'). First-time with his left foot, the Belgium international enjoyed his return to the Champions League, putting in a great display. He has now been involved in four goals, scoring two, in six starts in the competition.

The word: Opening
Paris had gone unbeaten in their six Champions League group stage openers since returning to the competition in 2012 (4 wins, 2 draws).

What's next?
It's now back to domestic matters. There will be a European aire to Sunday's game against Rennes (15:00CEST) with the Breton club in the UEFA Europa League this season. Paris will seek to maintain their 100 percent start at Roazhon Park where they have won on their last three visits.
