It was June 12: A first trophy!

49 years ago to the day, on June 12 1971 Paris Saint-Germain won their first major trophy: the National championship, now called Ligue 2.

"Paris Saint-Germain champions like… Bouttier !" was the headline of the weekly France Football in reference to French boxer Jean-Claude Bouttier, after the first trophy won by the Rouge et Bleu, victorious in the group final of the National following a triangular competition with the winners of the South group (Monaco) and the North group (Lille).

Paris Saint-Germain, already guaranteed to climb into the top division after becoming champions of the Centre group, are trying to win their first trophy.
After draws between Monaco and PSG, and then Lille and Monaco both with the same scoreline (2-2), the Parisians need to beat Lille in order to become National champions of France.

4,755 spectators are in attendance at the Stade Jean Bouin and Paris manage to land a KO from the first whistle: Bernard Béreau opens the scoring after only… 30 seconds of play (1-0, 1'). Jacques Rémond meets with success a cross from Jean-Claude Bras to double the advantage (2-0, 20'). The capital club have a deserved lead at the break but Lille haven't had their final say: Mane Bajic reduces the advantage and gets the game going again (2-1, 52'), then Patrick Chouvin misses a chance to equalise a few minutes later (55').

The deciding moment comes when a Bernard Guignedoux free-kick takes a slight deflection off Claude Dubaële and ends up in his own goal (3-1, 68'), then a run and cross by Bernard Béreau down the right is met by Jean-Claude Bras. The Paris attacker lays it off to Michel Prost who scores with a fantastic half-volley (4-1, 80'). Paris Saint-Germain cannot be caught now and they're crowned champions of France despite Lille scoring the final goal through Claude Dubaële (4-2, 88').

A deserved success, and Paris Saint-Germain are the only team to have had only two defeats all season, taking into account all the groups. It's a first trophy for a team from Paris since Racing Paris in 1949, the first of many for Paris Saint-Germain, now the French club with the most trophies.
