Idrissa Gueye: 'Keep top spot'

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder is bullish ahead of the midweek UEFA Champions League trip to Real Madrid.

Gana, by winning 2-0 against Lille, PSG have prepared in the best possible way for the Madrid game…
"It was an important win, because it's always tough after the international break. The players have had a lot of games, trips....so it wasn't easy, we lacked a little freshness, but we managed to hold on to the end and win the game. My assist? Angel Di Maria played a great ball in behind the defence, I fired a cross in and Mauro Icardi beat the goalkeeper. It's good, it put us on the right track."

Madrid come next. How are the squad approaching that game?
"We've already qualified, so now we have to do all we can to keep top spot in the group, which is important for the club. We're going to do everything to prepare well for the game and above all keep top spot, which could be important for the rest of the competition."

I'd imagine it's for this kind of match that you joined Paris Saint-Germain last summer…
"I joined Paris to contribute what I can and continue improving by trying to be useful to the club. Regardless of the game, against Real or smaller teams, with all due respect to them. It's the same for us. We always try to prepare games in the best possible way. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, but we always try to win every game."

Looking back, how did you feel about the sides' first meeting?
"It was good, but in the same way as all the other games. It's true that the match against Real was a bit special for me because it was my Champions League return and it was my first game for my new club in the competition. It was important for me to play well and for the whole team. We needed to win to start the group stage well. So, things went well."
