Edinson Cavani: 'We were unbeatable'

Paris Saint-Germain's all-time leading scorer looks back on a season to remember, and highlights the lessons to be learned to improve still more.

Paris Saint-Germain produced a great league campaign, despite defeats towards the end of the season and being knocked out of the cups. What's your feelings on the 2018/19 campaign?
"It's true that perhaps we didn't win as much as in previous years. We won only two of the four domestic trophies: the Trophée des Champions and the league. But the negative results will be important to win the trophies we were lacking. Those experiences, those defeats are going to make us think ahead of next year. I think everything is important, the trophies and the competitions we got knocked out of. It's a good season, but we have to be aware that there are still a lot of things to improve."

What needs improving exactly?
"We know very well there are a lot of things to change. I think that has to stay inside the dressing room and the club. But the most important thing is to always keep your mentality at its peak. You have to stay focussed and respect your opponents all the time. Everything that happened this year will be important for next season. But it's also crucial to enjoy winning and trophies. For me, overall, there were a lot of positive things."

At the start of the year, we saw the team's progress in big games, notably in terms of their approach…
"We have shown numerous times that when we are focussed and disciplined for 90 minutes, we can be one of the best teams in Europe. And I'm not the only one to say that. Everyone who knows football and even those who don't say it too. But we know there are things to improve, but that stays between us. There's a lot of work to do, and we know what we need to improve."

What gives you the motivation to be at your best in every game, especially at the Parc where you didn't lose a game all season?
"All the games at the Parc are similar. Now, every team comes here and wants to beat us, they're desperate to win against us. But you can lose a game simply because the other team was better, that's normal. I think the league was very good. The first six months, we were very good, we won a lot of matches and that gave us the opportunity to be champions later. Concentration was the most important thing we had at the start of the season, we were unbeatable."

Which moment from the season stands out for you? You scored a nice goal against Toulouse…
"I scored a nice goal, but I look for other emotions in a football match. It's always special to score, but the context plays a big role and that's what I remember. For example, the Classico we had in Marseille last year, it was a good goal, but it was the moment that left the biggest impression. We were down to ten men, it was the end of the game, and that goal meant we didn't lose the Classico and stopped the opposing fans from enjoying themselves. There were a lot of things that made that game special, but this season, nothing in particular made a big impression."
