Daniel Bernard has died at the age of 70

Daniel Bernard, the former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper (1977-1978, 32 matches in Rouge et bleu colours), started at Saint-Lorentin, in the Nice suburbs, before joining Cavigal Nice and then AS Saint-Etienne, in the juniors section. He spent time at Joinville for his military service in 1969 before joining Stade Rennais, for whom he played for eight seasons. Considered one of the best French goalkeepers, he wore the national jersey in the junior categories (thirty times), for the military, the amateurs and the Under-21s. On May 25 1975, he was on the bench for the Iceland-France game (0-0). Stade Rennais then suffered two relegations in three seasons, seeing him drop out of France contention.

In 1977, he signed for Paris Saint-Germain to relaunch his career, and was in competition with the young club hopeful Michel Bensoussan. After Dominique Baratelli joined, he left the capital club a year later and moved to Brest (1978-84) then Monaco (1984-85). At the end of his career, he set up home in the Finistère, where he recently died.

Paris Saint-Germain present their condolences to his family and those close to him.
