Buffon: 'We showed a great spirit'

The iconic goalkeeper looks back on his first season in the French capital.

Gianluigi, you picked up two trophies in your first season in Paris. What does it mean to you to add another two trophies to your list of honours?
"It was important to win the league and the Trophée des Champions, because we play to win trophies. It's not anecdotal to win a league, because it means you're the best team in France. It's never easy, but we did good work."

Though the end of the season was a little difficult, the start of it was incredible…
"At the start of the season, we did some incredible work. We showed a great spirit and good attitude to our work. We were solid and played good football. If we won 14 successive games, it's also thanks to that work."

What do you remember from the 4-0 win over Monaco in the Trophée des Champions?
"Before the match, I was a little afraid because we had to do without a lot of players during pre-season and there was already a trophy up for grabs. But we put in an incredible performance, I remember Di Maria's performance...He played with a lot of intensity until the last minute and we'd only had two training sessions. It was the same for Thiago Silva and Marquinhos. That day, I understood this squad is made up of players with a special attitude, players who always want to win."

What are your thoughts on the season overall?
"I'm extremely happy, because it's never easy to win and even more so at 41. It's difficult to stay at the top level, but I think we had a good season. I made a mistake against Manchester, but overall I'm happy. We mustn't forget that we had had an incredible run before that second leg, a season full of conviction and hope."
