Brest – Paris: 5 reasons to go all out

Before the 38th and final match of Ligue 1 which will see Stade Brestois take on Paris Saint-Germain, the club from the capital still have hope of experiencing a special evening.

Because it's the charm of the final match!

The final set of league matches always play host to a series of surprises, unexpected turn of events, and numerous come-backs. For each club, the potential ramifications rarely leave them indifferent. There are those that look to secure their position in the top flight, and those who will say goodbye to Ligue 1.

And then, there are those who want to make it to the top to dream of featuring in the most prestigious competitions and just above that, there are those who want to see their name engraved on a Hexagoal that is as heavy as the season was peculiar... Because it's also the charm of the final matches being played at the same time and bringing the league to a close in the best way possible: 90 minutes that last an eternity, and will mark the end of a season that has been made up of effort, happiness, delight, and at times, disappointment. They will reserve cold sweats for some, and tingles down the spine for others. And on Sunday, when Les Parisiens travel to Brest to close the 2020-2021 chapter, the club from the capital is unlikely to waver from this rule.

Because Paris could win the league!

Oh yes... Although Les Parisiens sit one point behind Les Lillois going into the final round of matches, history reminds us that Les Rouge et Bleu have previous of finding what is needed to turn things around on the final day of the season... As we reminded you, the club from the capital will take part in their 13th decisive final match of the season, with a positive record in their favour (7 positive results)...

Maybe you would say that Paris Saint-Germain have never been in such a situation? That's to be expected, it's an almost unseen scenario in the league's history. With just one point separating Lille (80) from Paris (79) before the final round of matches, this is in fact the smallest gap that we have seen between a leader and second place at this stage of the competition in the last 19 years... But there is precedence! And during the 2001/02 season, when Lens started the final match of the season with a one point advantage over Lyon, it was in fact Les Lyonnais who were named champions. You have understood: Angers and Brest will be major players in this latest coronation.

Because we believe!

Mauricio Pochettino was clear in his press conference on Saturday: we have no other choice but to believe in the chance to be named champions.
"I think that we are looking forward to and are motivated for this final match. We don’t have our destiny between our own hands, but taking home all three points is down to us. But we need to believe, to be ready and competitive. In football, you always have to believe. Whatever happens, we need to win and hope. We know that everyone will give their best. We hope to win on Sunday and take home the title.”

The whole of the Paris squad will therefore be giving their all at the Stade Francis Le Blé. Our forward Moise Kean explained the morale among the troops:  "Of course we believe. I am someone who never gives up, and I know that's the case for my teammates too. We are aware of our potential, and what we are able to accomplish."

Because les parisiens do well against brest

Although Paris don't have their destiny in their own hands, Mauricio Pochettino's side know that they will need to win the match in order to hope to hear positive news from Angers. And the positive in all that, the club from the capital often enjoy matches against Brest!

In fact, the club from Brittany have only won 11% of their matches against Paris in Ligue 1 (3/28), their lowest percentage against a side currently in the top flight... You also need to roll back 36 years to see SB29 beat Les Rouge et Bleu, their last win dates back to 26 January 1985 (3-1).

Paris are on a seven match unbeaten run in Ligue 1 (6 victories and one draw). They now need to continue to write history...

Because kylian is still hungry

Of course, the key to the match will be a team performance in order to overcome a Brest team driven by the attractive principles of Olivier Dall'Oglio. But how could we not consider how certain members of the squad could light up this final round of matches?

Kylian Mbappé, the league's top scorer with 26 goals, will, as always, be under the spotlight. The man with the most goals in Europe behind Lewandowski and who scored again on Wednesday in the Coupe de France final against Monaco (2-0), has already picked up 41 goals across all competitions, the best haul of his career.

And this match at Brest holds a very particular interest for him, because he could be named the league's top scorer for the third consecutive season. In doing so, he would become the first person to achieve this feat since Jean-Pierre Papin, 19 years before him. And we all know Mbappé loves a challenge. His recent stats are no less impressive, with six goals scored in his last four Ligue 1 matches. And the last time the Frenchman played at Brest (Round of 32 of the Coupe de France), he headed back to Paris with a brace in the bag...
