Herrera: 'The squad needs to be strong and united'

Paris midfielder Ander Herrera spoke to PSG TV about the start of the season, and the side's ambitions for the 2021-22 campaign.

Ander, HOW DO YOU JUDGE THE START OF THE SEASON?

"We are happy with our start to the season, but there's still a long way to go. There are a lot of matches still to play and a lot can still happen. However, it's always better to start well, like we have."

HOW DO YOU DEFINE YOUR ROLE WITHIN THE SQUAD?

"I try to help the squad as much as possible. I have said it a lot, but I'm a team player, I'm here to help my coach and my teammates, to make sure everything goes as well as possible and that we have a strong squad. I always say that we can't have a good season with just 11 or 12 players. The squad needs to be strong and united, and ready to take on any challenge at any moment."

AND THIS SEASON, THE CHALLENGE IS TO WIN BACK THE LEAGUE CROWN...

"Our ambition is to win every match. We want to win every competition in France; the league and the Coupe de France. Failing to win the league last season really hurt. We lacked something last term, we made too many mistakes and we dropped points in matches we should've won."

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DIFFERENTLY TO LAST SEASON?

"We need to accept that lots of teams play their 'match of the season' against us... That means we have to be physically stronger, that the defence is tighter. We can't make the same mistakes as last year, but we're not looking for revenge, we just want to win as many trophies as possible."

Paris Saint-Germain HAS BEEN VERY ATTACKING SO FAR THIS SEASON...

"We don't want to concede a lot of goals, but we can't go against our nature and our identity, which is founded on attack. That's important for us, for the players and the coaching staff. But we also know that playing this way means we can leave ourselves open to counterattacks. We have to try and control our opponents transitional play, while not abandoning our philosophy. The French Ligue 1 boasts many, very fast players, and we have to control them to be able to continue to play the football we love."
