A record season for Kylian Mbappé!

Taking home the golden boot and topping the assists tally in Ligue 1, the Paris Saint-Germain forward brought his talent to the fore during the 2021-2022 season.

On top of an excellent Ligue 1 campaign alongside his teammates, with the club from the capital winning a 10th Ligue 1 title as a reward, Les Rouge et Bleu’s number 7 also took home the individual trophies of top goal scorer (28 goals) and the most assists (17) in the league after Matchday 38 and the 5-0 victory over Metz on Saturday 21 May at the Parc des Princes. In doing so, the France international became the first player to pick up both trophies in the same campaign since the official rankings were created (2007-2008). During the season, he was directly involved in 45 league goals, a record in itself across the top five European leagues.

The World Champion became the third player to be named Top Goalscorer in Ligue 1 in four consecutive seasons, after Carlos Bianchi (1976-1979) and Jean-Pierre Papin (5, 1988-1992). Paris Saint-Germain saw one of its players win the trophy for the 13th time in the club’s history. It was also the 7th consecutive season that a player from the club from the capital took home the award and the 9th time in the last 10 seasons. Carlos Bianchi in 1978 and 1979, Pedro Miguel Pauleta in 2006 and 2007, Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2013, 2014 and 2016, and Edinson Cavani in 2017 and 2018 each secured the award before Mbappé’s four consecutive honours.

And this season, the Paris-born forward didn’t just look to traumatise the oppositions’ goalkeepers. He equally proved his selflessness, with 17 assists to his name and therefore tops the tally for most assists in Ligue 1. It’s the first time he has picked up the honour, and he even went close to beating the current national record, held by Angel Di Maria (18 assists during the 2015-2016 season). The club from the capital has seen one if its players take home the award for the fourth time since the creation of the official rankings (2007-2008), with Mbappé following in the footsteps of Di Maria (2016 and 2020) and Neymar Jr (2018).

A stratospheric season that deservedly saw the five-time Ligue 1 Champion (2017 with Monaco, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022 with Paris) named Player of the Year by his Ligue 1 peers, for the third consecutive season, equaling Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s record, who until now was the only player to have received the award on three occasions (2013, 2014 and 2016). Since the creation of the Trophées UNFP in 1994, a Paris Saint-Germain player has taken home the honour on 11 occasions. Mbappé follows in the footsteps of David Ginola (1994), Vincent Guérin (1995), Marco Simone (1998), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (2013, 2014 and 2016), Edinson Cavani (2017) and Neymar Jr (2018).
