A night to forget against Lyon

Paris Saint-Germain were defeated by Olympique Lyonnais this Sunday night in matchday 14 of Ligue 1 (0-1) which saw Neymar Jr leave the field injured.

Paris Saint-Germain knew that it would be a tough top of the table clash on their return to Ligue 1. Paris played twice this week at the Parc des Princes to book their ticket in the Champions League Round of 16. The Parisians now faced up against an in form Lyon side having had a whole week to prepare the game.
They were looking to get back to the top of the league after Lille had gone first earlier on in the day and Thomas Tuchel opted for a 5-3-2 formation with Neymar Jr and Moise Kean up front together for the first time.

From kick off it reminded Paris of a big European game. And it was Lyon who put them under pressure led by an incredible Kadewere performance. After his first chance crashed against the post (22’) and another strike off target, the Lyon forward finally gave them the lead by slotting past Keylor Navas (0-1, 35’).

With their pride hurt, the Parisians upped the tempo at the end of the half as Alessandro Florenzi’s powerful volley was stopped by Anthony Lopes (42’). The last chance in an exciting first period.

After the break the Rouge et Bleu came back with the same desire to break down a well-oiled Lyon defence. But their opponents didn’t allow Paris the space to work their magic. Despite a triple change to bring something new to the table – Ander Herrera, Idrissa Gueye and Kylian Mbappé – it was tough from the club from the capital to create chances even with Alessandro Florenzi’s marauding runs down the right flank.

The Parisians’ hard work wasn’t enough to break the Lyon defence down despite one last attempt from Kylian Mbappé (90+1’). The very end of the game was marred by Neymar Jr’s injury after a tackle from Thiago Mendes that led to him being sent off (90+6’). Paris Saint-Germain end the week with a disappointing loss. The Rouge et Bleu will have the opportunity to bounce back quickly as they face Lorient on Wednesday in matchday 15 of Ligue 1.
