A new record!
Paris Saint-Germain's performance on Sunday night was in perfect keeping with their start to the season so far. Nine wins in their first nine matches? Never has France's top flight seen such an achievement. And Paris' hunger for goals knows no bounds… perhaps not even France's borders…
In a hurry? Super-hungry? Or just simply set up to write a new - and golden - page in the 2018-19 record books? On Sunday night, as quickly as Kylian Mbappé can burst into a gap between defenders, Thomas Tuchel's men snaffled up Olympique Lillois' 82-year-old record of eight consecutive wins at the start of season 1936-37.
In scoring their biggest-ever win over OL in France's top flight, Paris Saint-Germain also took their points haul to 27 after nine rounds, something never before seen in France. A flawless record at home (five wins) and on the road (four wins), which attests to an impeccable consistency of effort. Be it coming from behind (3-1 in Guingamp), taking complete control (4-0 at home to Saint-Étienne) or simply running riot (5-0 at home to OL), these wins have held true to Thomas Tuchel's plan: bring the spectacle! With 32 goals to their name (with at least three per match, another record!) the Parisians have well and truly spoiled their fans!
Next stop, the European record!
Led by the league's two top scorers (Mbappé and Ney, eight goals) can Paris Saint-Germain maintain the tension? The European benchmark for wins t the start of a season belongs to Tottenham, who started their 1960-61 league campaign with 11 consecutive wins. With just a bit of imagination, fans could see Paris Saint-Germain equalling this continental record… with a win over old foes Olympique de Marseille at the Vélodrome on 28 October. Just behind Tottenham, on ten wins at the start of a league season, there stand Manchester United (1985-1986), AS Roma (2013-2014) and Bayern Munich (2015-2016). After the break, Thiago Silva and co. will have their destiny in their own hands as Amiens come calling at the Parc… bring it on!
