A look back at Lionel Messi's successful week

Having put in a remarkable display against Maccabi Haifa on Tuesday, Lionel Messi was nominated for the Player of the Week award in the UEFA Champions League and even won the Goal of the Week award. Let’s take a look back at the Argentine’s performance!

Having been chosen as the man of the match from his side's fine performance and 7-2 win over Maccabi Haifa on Tuesday, Lionel Messi delivered a top-drawer display. By scoring and assisting on two occasions, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner honoured his 50th Paris Saint-Germain appearance in brilliant fashion.

The striker saw his performance rewarded with a nomination for the Player of the Week award in the UEFA Champions League, alongside Benfica's Rafa Silva, Porto's Mehdi Taremi and Napoli's Giovanni Simeone, and could have even scored a third goal if his powerful, left-footed shot hadn't hit the crossbar.

And that's not all, as Messi also won the Goal of the Week award, beating competition from the likes of Chelsea's Kai Havertz, Benfica's Rafa Silva again and Marseille's Mattéo Guendouzi. In fact, the Argentine had already earned this title once before, on Matchday 3 of the competition, thanks to his goal against Benfica.

With five shots taken against the Israeli side earlier this week (the most of any player in that game), Messi also stood out through his selflessness, as his four key passes show. With four goals and three assists to his name in his last three Champions League matches, the Rosario native has contributed to a goal every 37 minutes!

Fresh off the back of taking home the UNFP's Ligue 1 Player of the Month award for September ahead of Lille's Jonathan David and Lorient's Dango Ouattara, La Pulga's scintillating form continues. In fact, with his 11 goals and 12 assists, the Argentine is the only player in Europe's top five leagues to have scored at least ten goals and provided at least ten assists in all competitions this season – proof, if proof were needed, of his astonishing start to the season.
