A hard-fought victory that will build confidence

Paris Saint-Germain defeated RB Leipzig this Tuesday night in Matchday 4 of the Champions League group stage (1-0). Here’s how it all went down.

This was an intense and extremely physical battle tonight as Paris Saint-Germain faced off against RB Leipzig for the second time, with tonight’s match taking place at the Parc des Princes. Thomas Tuchel decided to set up in a 4-3-3 formation with captain Marquinhos back in defence and an attacking trio of Neymar Jr, Kylian Mbappé and Angel Di Maria. The three forwards would constantly change position throughout the game.

Hard-work and selflessness were key in a tactical battle against an impressive Leipzig side. Straight from kick off the Rouge et Bleu were on the front foot as they made the most of every opportunity to counter-attack. That attacking intent was quickly on show as Angel Di Maria pounced on a loose ball and was fouled to earn a penalty. Neymar Jr was calm under pressure and slotted the penalty home to give the home side the lead (1-0, 11’).

Despite the Parisians still pushing to double their lead, the German side managed to grab a hold of the game. The Parisian defence had to be alert to ensure that the home team maintained the lead. Keylor Navas was called upon on multiple occasions (10’, 11’, 35’) before the break and once more just after half time (49’). The second half was largely dominated by the Roten Bullen as they piled the pressure on the Parisians with attack after attack.

Despite having to play without the ball for large periods and chances being sparse, the Rouge et Bleu had to dig deep to ensure that their lead stayed intact. With this gutsy performance, Paris Saint-Germain notch a vital three points in the Champions League group stages. It’s a result they’ll want to build upon away to Manchester United at Old Trafford next week.
