On its 50th anniversary, Paris Saint-Germain secured the 9th league title in its history. A historic title because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which reduced the championship by 10 games. Indeed, Ligue 1 was suspended on March 13, and with Thiago Silva, Kylian Mbappé, Neymar JR and their teammates then at the top of the table, the team were crowned French Champions without having had to play the usual 38 games. With 68 points in 27 games, the red and blues were on their way to a record season!

The match

Paris Saint-Germain put on a real show against their rivals Marseille on the 11th matchday.

At home, the Parisians played a memorable first half as they scored 4 goals in the first 45 minutes, a first in the history of Le Classique.

What's more, during this game Kylian Mbappé scored twice and became the first player to score in 4 consecutive games against Olympique de Marseille.

The player

The player most used by Thomas Tuchel in Ligue 1 during the 2019-2020 season (26 games played out of a possible 27), the Argentine shines in his favourite role: making goals.

In 26 outings, Angel Di Maria managed 14 assists, making him the best passer in Ligue 1 for the second time in his career.

Without the interruption of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Parisian number 11 would probably have beaten his record of 18 assists in a season, set during the 2015-2016 season.

The fans for the last match against Dijon

The fans are still present at the Parc des Princes for the victory against Dijon on the 27th matchday (4-0).

But it will be the last time for a long time that the stadium at the Porte de Saint-Cloud will be in action. It will not be until the 2021-2022 season that the fans will finally be back in the stands at the Parc.

The number

This season the league only lasted 28 games but Paris Saint-Germain only played 27.

Indeed, the match against Strasbourg scheduled for 7 March 2020 was initially postponed due to a risk of spreading the coronavirus.

The match was never played because the following Friday, March 13, 2020, Ligue 1 was suspended. It was definitively ended on 30 April.

The goal

NEYMAR JR VS STRASBOURG 14 SEPTEMBER 2019 - MATCHDAY 5

Against Strasbourg, at the Parc des Princes, Neymar Jr scored the goal of the season in his first match of the season. An acrobatic volley in the purest Brazilian style.

The anecdote

On 30 April 2020, the Ligue Professionnelle de Football votes to officially end the season.

The Paris Saint-Germain team, which is still leading despite being one game behind the rest of the table, was informed that it had won the ninth title in its history in a press release that marked the end of the competition.

This had never been seen before in the history of French football.

The skill

KYLIAN MBAPPÉ VS NANTES DECEMBER 4, 2019 - MATCHDAY 16

Against Nantes Kylian Mbappé fires a brilliant backheel past Alban Lafont after a superb assist from Angel Di Maria.

The best scorer and the best passer of the season combined for an exceptional move.

The statement

« It's a different title, in unimaginable circumstances, but it will remain a source of great pride. I can only thank God for being champion for the seventh time in eight years of Ligue 1. I dedicate this title to the fans and especially to all the doctors and medical staff who are fighting against COVID-19 in the world. They are our players today, they are the ones fighting to get us back on the pitch and in the stadiums as soon as possible. »

- Thiago Silva
