Pedro Miguel Pauleta: 'A special game'

The ex-Paris Saint-Germain striker (109 goals in 211 appearances between 2003 and 2008) tells us about his memories of Le Classique.

Pedro, how should a Parisian player approach Le Classique? Is there a special kind of preparation to play OM?

"A match against Marseille is always a special match. Special for the players and even more so for the supporters. You can feel it from the start of the week during training, in the city, everywhere. You feel the fans are different, that the team is different in the build-up to the game. It's always a special game, a match you absolutely want to win. You want to score goals, you want to play well for the fans, the club, Paris!"

You're one of Paris Saint-Germain's all-time leading goalscorers. What's it like to score against Marseille?

"For me, it was always special and important to score against Marseille. I remember very well my first game at the Parc against them in 2004. I scored. You know the importance of the game, for everyone. It's an annual classic of French football. It's the match that counts most for the fans. And I've been fortunate to score often in those games."

Do you have other good memories of games against OM?

"There's the Coupe de France final in 2006 that we won against Marseille. It's another trophy for the club and what's more against OM. And even if I didn't score in the game, lifting the Coupe France as Paris Saint-Germain captain that evening was something unforgettable."

Which current Paris Saint-Germain player impresses you most and why?

"Today, it's very difficult not to talk about Mbappé, a young Parisian with enormous talent. But I don't like talking about individuals. For me, what counts is the team, the squad, the technical staff, the fans. The most important thing is Paris Saint-Germain!"

What's your prediction for this game, which is key in the club's quest for a tenth Ligue 1 title?

"The most important thing is to win the game, to bring us closer to the title. The club has to keep winning trophies, to grow. Let's say 2-0."
