France-Italy, Chapter 3 at the Parc des Princes

Almost exactly one year after defeating Ireland in a Euro 2024 qualifier (2-0 on 7 September 2023), the French national team is back at the Parc des Princes to face Italy in the UEFA Nations League on Friday evening.

This will be the fourth match at the Parc des Princes since 2007, with an almost perfect record: 3 wins, against Australia (6-0 on 11 October 2013), Kazakhstan (8-0 on 13 November 2021) and Ireland (2-0) last year, with 16 goals scored and none conceded.

The Parc des Princes, the home of Paris Saint-Germain's Rouge et Bleu, as well as the home of the French national team until 1998, when the Stade de France in Saint-Denis was inaugurated.

In 1972, the new Parc des Princes stadium was built to host cup finals as well as French national team matches, creating many unforgettable memories over more than 25 years.

The first trophy won by the French team was on the Parc des Princes pitch, with their victory in the European Championship final against Spain (2-0 on 27 June 1984).

From the win against the USSR (now Russia) with a score of 1-0 on 13 October 1972, in a World Cup qualifier, to the 2-0 victory over Ireland, the French national team have played 78 official matches at the new Parc des Princes, with a record of 50 wins, 17 draws and 11 losses.

The French national team has already played twice on this pitch against Italy: a historic 2-0 victory for the French (on 23 February 1982), which was their first win against Italy in 62 years, and a 2-2 draw (on 11 June 1997) during the Tournoi de France.

Since the 1982 victory, the trend has shifted, with 12 matches played resulting in 6 wins, 5 draws, and just one loss for France.

France are currently on a three-match winning streak against Italy, a run that the Parisian quartet (Warren Zaïre-Emery, Ousmane Dembélé, Randal Kolo Muani and Bradley Barcola) selected for the big return of the French team to the Parc des Princes will aim to extend. However, Italy’s last line of defence, Gianluigi Donnarumma, will be determined to stop them!
