Marco Verratti: 'It was sometimes like playing at home'

News

The Italian midfielder looks back on the win in Manchester and ahead to Sunday's meeting with Saint-Étienne.

It was a great evening in Manchester on Tuesday, how do you explain the win?
"We had prepared the game and played well on the pitch. The coach did great work, he made things easier for everyone. We knew the areas where we could hurt them and what their strengths were. We showed great character, it's never easy to play at Old Trafford. We controlled the game, but it's not finished, there are still 90 minutes to be played."

Before the game, there were some doubts due to injuries notably, but the team was able to overcome that...
"People talked a lot about the injuries to Cavani and Neymar, saying that - without them - it would be difficult, but sometimes your strength comes from those who don't believe in you, because you hear them and you want to show them what you can do and prove them wrong. We are professionals, and we knew that we could put in a good display."

The Parisian fans made themselves heard - what does that do for you on the pitch?
"It's emotional, it's great to go away when you're a fan. They gave us a lot of strength, they can push you to make the effort which can change a move when you're tired. The fans are the best thing in football and we need them. They made so much noise that, at times, it was like playing at home."

Do you feel that you have become a leader in midfield?
"I get the impression that the club and the players have faith in me when I'm on the pitch, the coach also believes in me and that's important. When you wear this shirt, you have to give everything for 90 minutes and I know that. The team doesn't depend on just one or two players, we are a team and we need everyone."

On Sunday, it's back to Ligue 1 to face a tough team: Saint-Étienne!
"It's always difficult to go to Saint-Étienne, they're tough to beat at home and especially this year, they're having a very good season. Their coach, Jean-Louis Gasset, knows football, he's someone who gave a lot to me when he was at Paris Saint-Germain. We put a lot of effort in on Tuesday, but we're going there to win the game."
